Background of the Study
The increasing use of digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers has raised concerns about the potential negative effects of screen time on sleep patterns, particularly among adolescents. Studies have shown that excessive screen time, especially before bedtime, can disrupt circadian rhythms, making it difficult for individuals to fall asleep and maintain healthy sleep patterns (National Sleep Foundation [NSF], 2023). In Niger State, a large proportion of adolescents engage in prolonged screen time for both academic and recreational purposes, which has contributed to concerns about sleep deprivation and its effects on academic performance, mental health, and physical well-being (Okafor et al., 2024).
Adolescence is a critical developmental period, and sleep plays a vital role in growth, cognitive function, and emotional regulation. However, studies indicate that excessive screen time is increasingly interfering with sleep quality among adolescents (Aliyu et al., 2023). This study seeks to examine the impact of screen time on sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State and to explore the long-term consequences of poor sleep on their health and well-being.
Statement of the Problem
In Niger State, as in many parts of Nigeria, adolescents are increasingly engaging in prolonged screen time, leading to concerns about its impact on sleep patterns. Poor sleep is linked to a variety of negative health outcomes, including decreased academic performance, mood disorders, and impaired physical health (Eze & Yusuf, 2024). The problem is compounded by limited awareness of the detrimental effects of screen time on sleep and the lack of interventions to mitigate these impacts.
This study seeks to investigate the extent to which screen time affects sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State and to propose strategies for reducing screen time to improve sleep quality.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the relationship between screen time and sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State.
2. To examine the effects of poor sleep on academic performance, mental health, and physical well-being of adolescents in Niger State.
3. To recommend strategies for managing screen time to improve sleep quality among adolescents.
Research Questions
1. What is the relationship between screen time and sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State?
2. How does poor sleep due to excessive screen time affect the academic performance and mental health of adolescents in Niger State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce screen time and improve sleep patterns among adolescents?
Research Hypotheses
1. Increased screen time is significantly associated with poor sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State.
2. Adolescents with poor sleep due to excessive screen time will show a decrease in academic performance and an increase in mental health issues.
3. Interventions aimed at reducing screen time will significantly improve sleep patterns and overall well-being among adolescents in Niger State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of screen time on sleep patterns among adolescents in Niger State. Limitations include the challenge of accurately measuring screen time and sleep patterns, as well as potential biases in self-reporting.
Definition of Terms
• Screen Time: The amount of time spent on electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and televisions.
• Sleep Patterns: The regularity, duration, and quality of sleep, including when and how long an individual sleeps.
• Adolescents: Individuals typically between the ages of 10 and 19 years.
